Awarded annually to outstanding undergraduate students entering or continuing in a Bachelor of Arts in French, the Rose Shentow Scholarship in French honours the legacy of the late Rose Shentow.
Born in Ottawa on October 6, 1929 to Morris and Dina Feldberg, Rose Shentow (née Feldberg) was an inspiring educator. With a deep love for languages and an innate passion for teaching, she spent over 34 years sharing her knowledge of French, Spanish, and English with students across several schools in the Ottawa region. From September 1956 until her retirement in June 1990, Rose touched countless lives with her unwavering commitment to education.
She married her beloved husband, David Shentow, in 1950, and enrolled into Carleton University to obtain her Bachelor of Arts Degree in French Studies and Education in 1956, as a mother of two. During her graduation ceremony in May of 1959, Rose was awarded a special medal from the French Embassy in recognition of her dedication to teaching French, as well as for her pivotal role as one of the co-founders of Le Club Français, which brought together French and English-speaking students to help them overcome language barriers.
Rose always valued higher education, something she imparted to all of her students. This voracious love for education gave her the motivation to re-enroll back into Carleton University in 1969 and complete her Master of Arts in French Literature in 1973. She later retired from teaching in June of 1990.For her 90th birthday, Rose received a special congratulatory letter from the Education Board of Ottawa, thanking her for her years of dedication as a beloved teacher to so many students. She passed away at the age of 94 in Toronto.
This scholarship was set up as a token of appreciation to the French Department at Carleton University, as well as to Professor Dr. Charles Fleischauer and Professor Dr. J.S Tassie (Former Chairman of the French Department at Carleton University), who kindly supported Rose Shentow during her studies. Endowed in 2023 through the estate of Rose Shentow BA/59, MA/73.
