Strongly Influenced by his parents, Margaret and Herbert, and benefitting from a scholarship that supported his own academic journey, Laurin earned his Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1967 from Carleton University’s School of Engineering.
The Laurin Austin Garland Memorial Scholarship was endowed by Laurin’s devoted partner, Marjorie Ward, in 2026
Awarded annually to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in a Bachelor of Engineering degree, this scholarship is an important part of Laurin’s professional legacy. It honours his integrity and dedicated commitment to excellence that characterised his work in North America, the Caribbean, and Europe.
Gifted in many ways, Laurin’s interests extended well beyond his passion for engineering and entrepreneurship. Fuelled by his inquisitive nature and genuine curiosity about the world, Laurin’s appetite for outdoor pursuits included: camping, fishing, sailing in the French West Indies, and working on his 25-acre property between Almonte and Carp where he built a natural pond and cared for his horses.

As a young man Laurin also sang, played piano and guitar, and arranged music scores while a member of local bands, including the Starlighters. He liked speed and for many years was a well-known instructor at the Calabogie race track; and he was an avid follower of F1 racing. Last, but by no means least, Laurin’s personal life was also enriched by those with whom he formed lasting friendships and with whom he shared a common interest in antiques and other historical treasures.
Laurin was a father, grandfather, great grandfather, and a devoted partner. He was a natural-born leader, generous, meticulous, and committed to excellence; he was loved and respected by all who knew him.
Laurin’s memorial scholarship will help inspire students to pursue their dreams with the same passion and dedication that Laurin demonstrated throughout his life; and it will ensure that his significant legacy lives on in perpetuity.
