Overview
The Department of Health Sciences has created a Health Science Research Internship specifically for Black, Indigenous, and Racialized undergraduate students. Recognizing that systemic racism is embedded into the fabric of education systems, including Carleton University, the internship is one of many efforts to dismantle systems that perpetuate inequities. These internships will prioritize Black, Indigenous, and Racialized students in the Bachelor of Health Sciences at Carleton University to work in the lab of a leading researcher through paid internships. During this research internship, the Health Sciences student will obtain hands-on experience with all aspects of the research process.
The Background
As an effort to advance equity, faculty members and students are exploring various strategies to support Black, Indigenous, and Racialized students. This involves creating space for exploration and ensuring social justice and equitable practices within scientific research and teaching within our Health Sciences Department. In order to equitably assess eligible students, we will review academic achievement, work experience, financial need, and personal goals in academia and science. All faculty reviewers will be expected to complete the “Unconscious Bias Training Module” developed by the Government of Canada.
The Rollout
The selected undergraduate student(s) will work alongside a Health Sciences faculty member to conduct health-related research, analyze data, discuss results and contribute to the publication of those results. For many students, the chance to engage with health research scientists is the highlight of their education and often solidifies their intention to pursue health-related careers.
The Impact
As leading researchers and educators in the field of health sciences, it is our responsibility to address the historic and continued underrepresentation of Black, Indigenous, and racialized scientists in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Our efforts to support and promote the work of Black, Indigenous, and Racialized undergraduate students is one minor step to address discriminatory structures and practices. We commit to create meaningful and lasting change in our department to advance our shared efforts for more inclusive and equitable experiences for students.
