Overview
The Carleton University Human Rights Society is an academic society associated with the Human Rights and Social Justice (HRSJ) Program at Carleton University. We are concerned with raising awareness of human rights violations and fighting global injustice. We are completely student driven, and take up the issues that concern our members around the globe! Our main goals are to raise awareness and funds, to become active in the human rights field and to invest time and support towards Human Rights and Social Justice students during their time at Carleton, sharing useful tools and events.
The Rollout
Our club is dedicated to raising awareness of human rights violations and fighting injustice both locally and globally. Your generous contribution will help us cover our operational expenses, including:
- The distribution of our monthly newsletter, an important educational resource for human rights news across the world;
- Support for our advocacy initiatives via our social media and digital outreach;
- Hosting educational events and panels that inspire community engagement and awareness;
- Venue expenses and outreach platform fees.
With your support, we will be able to engage more students and community members in meaningful discussions, foster understanding and inspire action toward equality and justice.
The Impact
The impact of our club has extended far beyond individual events, creating lasting academic, personal and community level change. Through initiatives like kits of compassion, where we assembled essential-needs kits for vulnerable individuals, and contributing to local organizations such as HighJinx we strengthened our collective understanding of local inequities while taking tangible action to address them. On a global scale, our fundraisers had meaningful reach: we raised over $20,000 for organizations like HumanAppeal, Human Concern International, and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, supported children living in refugee tents along the Syrian-Lebanese border, and helped a Gazan father and his children as they rebuilt their lives. These experiences fostered empathy, leadership and a sense of responsibility toward displaced and marginalized communities. Overall, these projects created enduring impacts by empowering participants to blend advocacy with service and inspiring our community to stand in solidarity with those facing injustice.
