Overview
Founded in 2024, Biomedical Carleton Applied Research and Engineering Team (BioCARE) is the newest design team offered to students. BioCARE is Carleton University’s first and only biomedical engineering design team! We are a team of students with a passion for helping people through advances in technology. As a team we design, build and test prosthetic limbs with the intent of participating in both regional and international competitions. Our team is the only team at Carleton that offers Biomedical oriented design. BioCARE places an emphasis on practical prosthetic design with a mindset focusing on patient oriented solutions. Our team is currently designing a prosthetic arm to compete in the 2028 international prosthetic design competition: CYBATHLON
The Background
BioCARE aims to revolutionize the prosthetics industry by applying fundamental principles of engineering towards the creation of a prosthetic arm. As a team we are targeting the international design competition, Cybathlon, hosted in 2028. This competition focuses on testing the functionality of prosthetics in everyday tasks, challenging us to come up with innovative solutions to replicate the movements of conventional limbs. It is our hope that the technologies we design and implement for our competition device will find their way into the larger prosthetics market to help improve the independence of those living with limb difference.
The Rollout
The funds raised will be used for the purchase of equipment and materials which will aid in the development of our prosthetic arm. These materials are often specialized for our design, custom built for each user of our device, and prohibitively expensive as they must be medical grade components to ensure safety of the user. We are grateful for all donations towards BioCARE’s initiatives, together we are building a better future for those living with limb difference!
